1 - What exactly is embossing? 1- What exactly is embossing? [TOP] Embossing is simply using some form of a male and female mold in combination with heat, time and pressure to shape a garment in the form of the mold. A backing material will hold this shape in place for the life of the garment. The backing determines the wash-ability of the embossing. Download a brief embossing demonstration video here. 2- What materials can I emboss on? [TOP] The fact is that with pneumatic/air operated machines you can emboss in natural fibers and some leather. The backing will determine the life of the embossing. Air operated machines have limited capabilities due to lack of pressure (air 80 - 110 PSI versun 1400 plus PSI hydraulic). Until recently there were really only three choices of backings, all have poor wash-ability, tend to have glue seepage and are not conducive to production due to the need to die cut or hand cut the backing.

[TOP] Currently embossing charges rival that of embroidery in the retail market. The cost of the mold is equivalent to the cost of digitizing. For example, an 8,000 stitch piece of art will cost on average of $7-$15 to digitize. The same design as an embossing mold would cost you $45-6000. The mold or die is good for life, it is a one time cost that your customer pays you and you have a markup on. Both are good for life. An embossing from that mold takes 12 seconds typically and most people charge $3 to $6 per embossing depending on the item, number of pieces etc. The cost of the backing (if required, certain materials will hold the embossing perfectly without backings due to the pressure we use) is about $10 per square yard and yields 32 images. Cost to emboss an image will be equipment, operator, electricity and $0.32 per piece. In other words a 500 piece embossing will bring $2500 revenue and take a maximum of two hours with our 705, 710 or higher machines and one operator. If you were to sell this wholesale to a tough account who is extremely price conscious you could do the 500 piece embossing for $0.75 each and still have the machine yield $187 per hour. Embossing today is at the same stages embroidery was 10 or 15 years ago. Those who venture into the market today have a wide-open competition free environment/territory. Today there is a massive saturation of screen printers and embroidery houses, simply look in your yellow pages if you need a reminder. (FYI, over 21,000 screeners and over 16,000 embroidery companies) You can count on your printing or embroidery quote being shopped and compared! Even if there were a way to penetrate 50% of the decoration and embroidery market the embossing market would still have virtually no direct competition for the next five-year window. 8- Is embossing easy to learn? [TOP] All fabric embossing techniques can be learned in a half day. Within 15 minutes of hooking up the machine any operator can be embossing successfully. Technology has made it easier for companies like yours to have the option of creating their own molds in house on the spot in a few hours. It is as simple as taking your color image, converting it to gray scale then allowing the engraver to take over. The darker the grayscale the deeper the engraving, it is that simple. Costs of the dies are now even cheaper and there is no need to depend on outside services. Requiring only 5 mold/dies per month can justify an on site engraver. Most embossers use 5 molds per day! [TOP] The 705 and 710 embossing machines are about the size of a refrigerator, ideally one should allow a 10’ by 10’ (3m by 3m) space so that an ideal work flow pattern can be achieved.
